Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has cancelled a death warrant for William Lee Thompson, 74, who was found guilty of murder in Miami-Dade County. It is the first time DeSantis has cancelled an execution. A second execution was still set to go ahead Tuesday.
The decision came days after a problematic lethal injection involving Christa Pike drew sharp attention over Florida's execution process. The governor gave no immediate public explanation for withdrawing the warrant for Thompson in particular.
