In operations, these cruisers carried out convoy escort missions, participating in World War II actions, including Mediterranean actions. HMS York in particular suffered damage from Italian explosive motorboats, later salvaged and scrapped in 1952.

She also participated in the British Norway campaign, and was later reassigned to the Mediterranean Squadron.
