The cast of The Rookie has apologised for the abrupt cliffhanger ending to Season 8. The audience had been left in suspense after the last scene dropped out. Creator Alexi Hawley revealed at a fan event that Season 9's premiere will be expanded past the standard run. Nathan Fillion said that filming for Season Nine kicks off on the fifth of August.
