A US Republican congressman stated that nuclear weapons might equip American submarines deployed in Australia under the AUKUS pact. He made the comments following a visit to the country. Reports suggest the US is pushing the Australian government on the Port of Darwin lease. The US is also seeking increased Australian defence spending at this stage. The AUKUS agreement covers nuclear-powered submarines for Australia as part of the pact.
