A extensive tsunami alert was released for coastal strips through Mexico and Guatemala shortly thereafter.
The ground kept jumping, shaking towns further north into Guatemala and El Salvador too.
Moments after 4 a.m., a 7.3 quake rattled the same area.
No accounts of injury or cracked buildings surfaced after the warnings.
