The biggest island is of volcanic origin, and Te Manga peak stands as a notable feature, and it saw HMS Bounty mutineers in 1789, before missionary activity shaped its political order. It remains the Cook Islands’ most populous island, with a long history of ariki-led governance and conversion to Christianity.
